Dean Holland, Starting With Marketing, Module 2 – Social Slaughter

Module two of Dean Holland’s, Starting With Marketing was finally unleashed. It was another eye opener for me and I would imagine that it was an eye opener for many of the other students enrolled in the class.

This module had a series of training videos regarding, what else, Social Media and how to use it to drive traffic to your blog or website. There were eight videos, including videos by a person that I had never heard of by the name of Perry Belcher. Belcher talked about the dos and don’ts of using Twitter as a tool to drive traffic off of Twitter to your website. Belcher was very animated and made the lesson fun. You can find him on YouTube for free, by clicking here.  Lots of useful information on the subject.  Enjoy.

The eight videos included in this module were as follows:

  • What is Social Media? (newbie video)
  • Examples of Social Media (specifically Tweeter and Facebook)
  • Twitter (basics)
  • Your own blog (as a Social Media venue)
  • Marketing NOT selling (huge eye opener; for me at least)

The next three were huge and they were the videos by Perry Belcher, be sure to check out his blog.

  • Social Media Marketing | Perry Belcher
  • 7 Secrets of Social Media
  • How I made 5000 Twitter Friends in 90 days

You can take a look at Perry’s videos yourself and get a ton of useful info, but in short here is what I gleaned from this module.

Twitter should be viewed like a party.  Imagine this, you are at a party having a great time with all your friends and a guest arrives, let’s just call him Jack (you can guess his last name later).  Jack walks up to the group of friends that you’re talking to and paints on a cheesy smile, then…  his trench coat opens and what the?  What do you see?  Oh my God, he’s trying to sell you CDs, DVDs and some watches at a party he was invited to.

OK. You tell me, how many friends will this guy make at that party?  How many guests will he alienate?  That’s NOT what you want to do at a party, and if you want to drive traffic to your website using Twitter you definitely don’t want to be that guy.

What you should do is be a valuable member of your Tweeter community.  Recommend some funny YouTube videos that you’ve seen, post some interesting stories, provide valuable information.  Most of all, do not try to sell or you will lose Twitter friends fast.

I don’t know if you have noticed or not, but if you have a lot of Twitter friends, many of them are doing the wrong thing.  Buy this from me, buy that from me… sell, sell, sell.  Don’t be that guy.  Be a Twitter friend, not a Twitter fiend, and you will make sales when the time is right.

Wishing you the best,

Ed

Hi Ed,

I’ve just started going through the module today and should get my Twitter setup very soon.

I heard that people on Twitter are doing very dumb things like u say……but we need to do it cause our coach Dean asked us to……oh well……

We might just ask Dean how we can deal with spams from others cause i just hate being bombarded by idiots who wouldn’t stop pushing the next best gadgets.

Huddson

Hey Ed, you seem to be kicking ass and taking names and quickly… Nice to see this growth in just a short time.

Good point on the Twitter as I have to quickly unfollow some who are just hocking product after product….

Hi CuzinTim!
Thanks so much for your comment.
I’m so glad that we are learning together, and we will be successful.
I am a newbie, but please let me know if I can help you in any way.

Thanks again,

Ed

Hi Huddson.
Thank you for commenting on my blog.
Yeah. We will figure this thing out together.
I’m sure that Dean has lots more in store for us, and I can’t wait.
I will be on the lookout for tools that we can use to manage our Twitter accounts, I’m sure they’re out there, and I will post them in the forum.

Thanks again Huddson (cool name by the way),

Ed
